Praia do Forte

Iemanjá’s Party

It is a party that takes place on February 02nd. The fishermen get together, decorate their boats, buy offers, and along with the Mãe de Santo (Saint’s Mother) they offer presents, flowers, mirrors and perfume to Iemanjá, the Queen of the Sea. They all ask for luck on fishing and in love.

Carnival

The “caretas” (youngsters wearing papier-mârché masks) make the party going out on the streets following the “tabaroas” block (women wearing country and extravagant clothes, and excessive make-up). The idea is to have inadequate and contrasting costumes: witches, widows, pregnant women, women with horns, etc. And, finally, the “devils” (men painted in black wearing a tail and horns) who go around the streets scaring and entertaining people. They play a zabumba (a popular band composed of wind and percussion instruments). It is called “batucada”.
